NATURAL SCIENCE 3º

Today is Wednesday the 18th of November 2,015

UNIT 2: PLANTS

-    Plants are living things.

- - Reproduction: Plants reproduce from seeds.

-- Nutrition: Plants make their own food through the photosynthesis process.

1.  ROOTS

-     - The roots are underground.

-     - Roots absorb water and minerals from the soil.

-     - Roots fix the plant to the ground.

2.  STEMS

-      - The stem is above the ground.

-      - There are 2 types of stems:

  1) Hard stems:

   - Hard stems are rigid.
   - Hard stems are made of wood
   - Trees have trunk and branches.

  2) Soft stems:

   - Soft stems are flexible and they are usually green.

   - Grasses normally have soft stems.

3. CLASSIFICATION OF PLANTS ACCORDING TO THEIR STEMS

We classify plants into 3 groups depending on their stems.

These groups are:

1)    Trees have a thick main stem called trunk. The branches grow from the trunk.

2)   Bushes have a trunk much shorter than the trunk of a tree. The branches are very close to the ground.

3)   Grasses have soft stems. Grasses don´t grow very tall.

     4. LEAVES

-     - Leaves are the green part of plants.

-    -  Some plants lose their leaves in autumn. These plants are called deciduous.

-     - Other plants have green leaves all year. These plants are called evergreen.

-     - Plants make their food in the leaves.

     5.  FLOWERS

-      - The reproductive organs of plants are in the flowers.

-     - Parts of a flower:

1)    The calyx is made up of small green leaves. These leaves are called sepals.

2)   The corolla is the most beautiful part of the flower. It is made up of coloured leaves called petals.

3)   The stamen and the pistil are in the middle of the flower. These are the reproductive organs of the plant.

6.  FRUITS

-     -  Seeds are inside the fruit.

-      - Plants have different types of fruit.:

1)    Fleshy fruit:

a.     It is juicy and contains a lot of water.

b.     For example, melons and oranges.

2)   Nuts:

a.    It has very little water.

b.    For example, hazelnuts and acorns.

7. WE EAT MANY PARTS OF PLANTS

UNIT 1. LIVING ORGANISMS: THE ANIMAL KINGDOM

1. LIVING ORGANISMS

- There are 2 types of living organisms:

1. Aquatic organisms: They live in rivers, lakes, oceans, seas or ponds.

2. Land organisms: They live on dry land.

- Other living organisms are not animals or plants:

              Algae                            Bacteria

         Fungi                                Microbes

2. RECOGNISING A LIVING ORGANISM

- All living organisms perform the 3 vital functions:

1. Nutrition: Living organisms need food, water and air to live and to grow.

2. Interaction: Living organisms feel what happens around them and react.

3. Reproduction: Living organisms can produce offspring.
